It is one of the most vibrant cities in Southeast Asia, and definitely worth a visit. But Bangkok has more to offer than Temple, Thai massages, and Khao San Road. Above all, it also has a quiet side, as this abandoned Ghost Tower proves impressively.

His real name is Sathorn Unique Tower, but the almost 185 meter high building is now designated worldwide as Ghost Tower. Construction started in 1990, when Thailand began to boom as a tourist country. Residential and office units suppose to be filled with life in the 49-storey building. But then came the Asian crisis, financial resources were scarce and the construction in 1997 stopped. The crazy thing: The shell of all floors was completed, which is why the skyscraper looks very impressive even today. Meanwhile the Ghost Tower has become a popular "attraction" among backpackers.

Although the building is very dilapidated and in danger of collapsing, many backpackers explore it at own risk. Backups: nil. Fall Hazard: large. And you must climb the floors all alone by stairs.

About the Ghost Tower there are some curious facts: According to a travel blog, the Thai architect Rangan Tetsuwan have been sentenced in 1993 because of the planned murder of the President of the Supreme Court in Thailand. Although the fact never took place, he was convicted in 2008 and acquitted in 2010. Furthermore, the Ghost Tower 2014 came tragically to worldwide fame when a Swedish backpacker committed suicide. Also rumors making the rounds that the ghost tower was built on the territory of a former cemetery and dead souls would be inside building.

What probably ensures the greatest adrenaline emissions among young people is the danger of the old building. Because only this is the appeal of course, no railing at all, walls and floors are also missing here and there. But also the unforgettable views of the ghost tower are pretty convincing. The mighty Chao Phraya river meanders through the countless buildings, you feel as a king of the world. And the sunsets are unforgettable.
