Domestic flights within Sri Lanka is not that commercial for locals and tourists, train or bus dominate the transport inside the country. However, small seaplanes and propeller machines offering their service in several destinations in Sri Lanka.
Bus
The red state busses, also called CTB, are very cheap but the comfort is low. You can stop them anytime and anywhere, just pull the bell cord or press the button. Windows are not always available, important for the monsoon season.
Intercity busses are operated private, they have curtains on the windows and often air condition. Fix time schedules are rare, departure is when the bus has an appropriate fill level. Destinations are in the windscreen and through loud shouting of the cashier. The first rows are reserved for monks. You can just get in the bus and choose a seat, the ticket inspector is coming to you during the ride.
Tourist buses are available on popular routes, the quality is high standard. Tickets you can get at local travel agency’s or online.

The certainly best way of traveling through Sri Lanka is by train.
The third class has two variants: suburban trains have hard plastic benches and old third class trains have padded seats.
In addition to the regular trains exist intercity trains on selected routes, they stop not so often and have a moderate speed, Colombo – Kandy in approx 2,5h. These trains are running two times a day and are often booked out,
tickets should be purchased as early as possible and primary acquirable at strain stations. some private provider has also online booking.
